Elder abuse

 

Different types of abuse

Financial abuse is frequently accompanied by blackmail and threats:

  • Theft of the person's belongings
  • Misappropriation of funds
  • Fraudulent powers of attorney
  • Phoney service contracts

Physical and sexual abuse:

  • Some people are pinched
  • Pushed around
  • Roughed up
  • Hit
  • Forced to perform sexual acts

Psychological abuse is used chiefly to control people through:

  • Fear  
  • Insecurity
  • Guilt
  • Humiliation
  • Deprivation of company

Negligence involves depriving the person of:

  • Basic care
  • Food
  • Medication

If you are a victim...

Talk to someone you trust.

Tell your doctor or a resource person at your CLSC (CSSS).

If you need someone to talk to or you want advice, you can call:

If you are a witness...

Tell a care worker who can give you advice.

Try to speak to the victim alone and find out how he or she feels about the situation.

Communicate with the victim regularly until the situation is resolved.
