The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) serves the entire island of Montréal, an area of 496 km2 with 1,800,000 inhabitants.

The SPVM is a first-degree responder for the community. Its responsibilities include:

• Protecting the lives and property of the citizens
• Maintaining peace and public security
• Preventing and combating crime
• Enforcing laws and regulations

WORK FORCE

The organization includes nearly 4,600 police officers and over 1,600 civilian employees. Women make up 30% of the work force.

188 of the police officers are from ethnic minorities and some 291 belong to visible minorities.

Postes de quartier

The Postes de quartier (PDQs) are the first responders for public security, providing the basic services for the local populations they serve.

There are 33 PDQs serving citizens across the territory of Montréal.

Service à la communauté

Each neighbourhood station operates under the auspices of one of four Service à la communauté – Nord, Sud, Est, Ouest. These four management teams are fully responsible and independent, and therefore better able to monitor and follow up on events in their region.

Each regional management team is headquartered in an operational centre along with the investigation, detention, intervention, analysis and prevention units that serve the PDQs in that region.
